Custodian

JOB SUMMARY: To create and maintain a cleaner and healthier environment for office buildings, campus sites, and grounds. This position is responsible for performing ongoing janitorial services, deep cleaning, infectious control, maintenance, and minor repairs across assigned CINHS locations. Using municipality, state, and federal guidelines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Daily Duties

  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms, kitchens, sinks, and high-touch surfaces
  • Refill soap and towel dispensers in restrooms and classrooms
  • Vacuum carpeted areas; sweep and mop tiled floors
  • Dust and wipe surfaces, vents, lights, furniture, and fixtures
  • Empty trash cans and replace liners; dispose of waste in designated dumpsters
  • Maintain the janitor’s closet in a neat and organized condition
  • Ensure all specified doors are locked, all lights are turned off, Lock and secure buildings, check windows and doors, and set alarms
  • Provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all cleaning chemicals

Common Areas (Front Desk, Waiting Areas, Offices, Hallways)

  • Vacuum carpets and sweep/dust mop hard floors
  • Wet mop high-traffic areas at least twice weekly
  • Clean entrance glass doors and spot-clean carpet stains
  • Organize furniture neatly for the next business day
  • Dust/ wipe counters, tabletops, file cabinets, and desktops (if clear of clutter)
  • Exclude cleaning of office machines and electronics
  • Restrooms and Classroom Toilet Stalls
  • Empty and re-line trash cans, including feminine waste
  • Sanitize sinks, dispensers, fixtures, mirrors, baby changing stations, and toilets a) to be free of smudges & streaks
  • Refill paper products and soap
  • Sweep and damp mop floors; disinfect switches and doorknobs

Break Rooms and Kitchenettes

  • Wipe tables, countertops, and sink fixtures
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors
  • Clean microwave inside and out; wipe refrigerator exterior
  • Empty and re-line trash cans Inlet

Grounds and Playground

  • Sweep entrances and play areas daily
  • Inspect and remove debris or hazards

Weekly Duties

  • Clean windows (interior/exterior), gym floors, and sidewalks
  • Sanitize waste bins and dining furniture
  • Dust light fixtures, windowsills, and remove cobwebs
  • Sanitize doorknobs and other high-touch surfaces

Monthly & As-Needed Services

  • Dust heat registers, window ledges, picture frames, moldings, and baseboards (up to 6.5 feet)
  • Clean shed gutters and maintain cleaning equipment
  • Conduct supply inventory and place orders
  • Dust IT rooms under supervision

Seasonal Floor Maintenance

  • Winter Break (December)
    • Deep scrub and apply fresh finish to hallways and classrooms
  • Summer Break (June–August)
    • Strip and wax floors in hallways, bathrooms, and classrooms
    • Steam cleans all carpeted areas
    • Perform extra services (e.g., window cleaning, carpet care) coordinated with staff
    • Maintain janitorial services in admin areas and summer program classrooms   

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Familiarity with Alaska Native/American Indian heritage and culture; ability to communicate effectively with children and families in the CINHS program
  • Safe operation of cleaning equipment and proper handling of industrial cleaning agents
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and complete tasks on time

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous janitorial experience required
  • CPR/ First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Successful completion of TB and hepatitis screenings and required vaccinations
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check as required by state and federal law
  • Current Alaska driver’s license must be at least 21 years old with a clean driving record and proof of insurance – Preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position requires the ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to varying weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures. While travel is minimal, employees may occasionally be required to travel for work-related purposes. This role involves potential exposure to infectious diseases and requires strict adherence to all safety and health protocols. Employees may encounter emotionally charged situations and must be prepared to interact with frustrated or upset coworkers, parents, and children in a sometimes hostile or high-stress environment. Physical demands include frequent bending and stooping to clean low surfaces such as baseboards and restrooms, reaching and stretching to access high areas like shelves and vents, and repetitive arm movements for tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and wiping. The position also requires standing and walking for extended periods, manual dexterity for handling tools and cleaning supplies, climbing ladders or step stools to reach elevated areas, and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
