JOB SUMMARY: Perform a variety of office support in the areas of personnel management, resource management, administrative and secretarial duties for the department as well as programmatic support for the program.

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for providing culturally relevant curriculum and mentoring to staff, students, and parents, providing consultation to Cook Inlet Native Head Start management regarding the cultural milieu of the program, and providing supervisory oversight of all cultural components of social, emotional, and educational services provided to children and families. Responsible for strengthening CINHS programs through cultural enhancements in all areas.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide culturally relevant leadership to staff and students;

· Create and implement developmentally appropriate Alaska Native Cultural activity to support the curricula utilized by CINHS.

· Conduct small group cultural activities for students with the assistance of teaching staff and family advocates.

· Schedule and plan agendas and participate in cultural training/activities for staff quarterly and during pre-service training.

· Serve as a cultural liaison and consultant for teachers, family partners, and the community.

· Facilitate the creation and implementation of assessments pertaining to cultural competencies.

 

2. Consult with Family Program and Educational service staff regarding cultural relevancy.

· Ensure that the needs of staff and students are identified and addressed.

· Function as part of a team to ensure that activities for family night and other community activities are culturally relevant.

· Assist in developing culturally relevant ceremonies for CINHS students, staff, and families.

· Provide proposed information for newsletters, the website, and other publications sent out through CINHS.

 

3. Provide direct services to parents through weekly activities to develop strong families through culturally appropriate activities.

· Work with the Executive Director, Education Director/Content Area Expert, and Education Coordinator to implement appropriate cultural activities.

· Develop and implement Alaskan Native Parent support through activities that allow parents to come together to share time and learn traditional art, crafts, storytelling, and dance.

· Develop and implement opportunities to share traditional values with parents that strengthen family ties and model togetherness and responsibility in a fun, engaging manner.

· Partner with families on developing their stories and addressing generational issues.

· Teach gathering and stewardship through the preservation of traditional values.

 

4. Assist with enrollment and recruitment activities and other required Performance Standards activities as appropriate.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

CINHS programs are established to serve a primary population comprised of Alaska Natives affiliated with the Cook Inlet Region Inc. (CIRI) and Alaska Natives and American Indians within CINHS’s geographical service area. Employees should thoroughly understand the culture and needs of Alaska Natives and American Indians. Such knowledge is critical to achieving CINHS's mission of Working with the Native Community.

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D.

2. Three (3) years’ experience serving Alaska Native persons.

3. Two (2) years’ experience in education curriculum development and delivery, specifically in Alaskan Native cultures and early childhood or elementary education.

4. The ability to teach a basic level of Alaska Native language to young children and adults.

5. Coordinate and facilitate additional cultural programming, including dance.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

2. Demonstrates ability to function in a leadership role with minimum supervision.

3. Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

4. Extensive knowledge of diverse Alaskan Native cultures and abilities to teach those cultures.

5. Creative abilities to organize and conduct culturally relevant ceremonies.

6. Demonstrated ability to use advanced word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

7. Flexibility with respect to time and days able to work and work tasks.

8. Other duties as assigned.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

They may be exposed to infectious diseases. Safety precautions for employees, such as blood drawing to screen diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc., are necessary. Occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled patients and/or family. The work requires sitting at the station to perform administrative duties. Requires routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying items weighing less than 40lbs. Must be able to work under physically and emotionally stressful conditions. Travel may be required.
